I feel that after proudly serving as a local MP for 40 years, I have the experience to listen to the public and help be their strong voice in supporting the police and holding them to account.
I served 10 years as Deputy Prime Minister involved in anti-terrorism policy and the COBRA emergency committee. I was also Secretary of State responsible for the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
I have also stood in for the Prime Minister on various occasions, co-ordinating the Government’s initial response to the 7/7 bombings, the Omagh bombing, various other terror alerts, the Asian Tsunami and the UK floods.
My experience of running large departments, working with the police and the fire service, has given me the knowledge of working closely with key stakeholders and offering a strategic vision to help bodies deliver on an operational level.
As Secretary of State for the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions I managed a budget of £130 billion, saved the Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail link as well as drafting policies on getting people back to work and regenerating our areas, like the New Deal for the Communities programme.
I was also responsible for setting out the strategies for local government finance, council tax, the fire services and the police levy.
More recently, I was the Council of Europe’s Rapporteur into the riots that followed the Armenian presidential elections. My actions led to the release of 130 political prisoners.
